Lesson Study: Cycle III

Lesson Study Cycle III was conducted in April 2023 in Ms. Margot's ninth grade classroom at High Tech High. After researching and attempting change ideas, we designed and executed our lesson study. Team members were there for observations and all debriefed afterwards. Below, are details regarding the focal students, the lesson itself and plans for moving forward.

Context for Cycle III

The lesson study team was comprised of three teachers working in grades 5-9 in both  charter and project-based settings. All teachers work in either humanities classes Together, the team identified a problem of practice through which we created goals for our lesson study.

Problem of Practice: Students are struggling with vocabulary,  reading comprehension, and spelling due to needing additional support. After implementing some diagnostic tasks, we hypothesized that it students need intentional and strategic vocabulary and morphological instruction in order to build their understanding of more complex vocabulary How will we support students’ morphological awareness in order to help them become better readers and spellers?

Research Theme: When students practice using morphological knowledge to aid reading comprehension, they become more capable and confident readers and spellers.

Equity Goal: Students will use morphological awareness to develop their literacy and writing skills.
